Tech & Research Institute

Mwamic’s Science, Technology & Research Institute (MSTRI) is dedicated to advancing research, development, and commercialization of industrial hemp in Africa. We believe that hemp is a strategic crop that can unlock solutions in agriculture, health, construction, textiles, energy, and environmental restoration. Through science-led innovation, MSTRI is positioning Uganda and the region at the forefront of a green, bio-based economy—creating jobs, restoring degraded land, and offering eco-friendly alternatives for industry.

The Hemp Research Initiative is a pioneering program under Mwamic Science, Technology & Research Institute (MSTRI) dedicated to exploring the full potential of industrial hemp in transforming agriculture, health, manufacturing, and environmental restoration across Africa. Through cutting-edge research and collaboration, we are unlocking hemp’s ability to address some of the most urgent challenges facing our communities today.

Why Hemp?

Hemp is one of the world’s most versatile crops. It grows quickly, requires minimal chemical inputs, and thrives in a variety of climates. From textiles to building materials, food to fuel, and medicine to biodegradable plastics—hemp offers eco-friendly alternatives that are both sustainable and economically viable.

In Uganda and across Africa, hemp has the potential to revolutionize industries, create jobs, and restore degraded environments.

Our Focus Areas

1. Agronomic Research

We conduct trials and studies to identify the best hemp varieties suited for Uganda’s soils and climate. Our research also focuses on regenerative practices, organic farming, and sustainable irrigation for hemp cultivation.

2. Value-Added Product Development

MSTRI is developing prototypes and testing new applications for hemp, including:

  • Hempcrete for eco-friendly construction

  • CBD oil and nutraceutical products

  • Hemp textiles and fibers for fashion and packaging

  • Biofuels and green industrial inputs

3. Medicinal & Nutraceutical Exploration

We are researching the therapeutic potential of cannabinoids (especially CBD) in treating conditions such as chronic pain, anxiety, and epilepsy. Our focus is on safe, ethical extraction and collaboration with health professionals to validate medical uses.

4. Environmental Sustainability

Hemp is known for its phytoremediation capabilities—it cleans the soil by absorbing heavy metals and toxins. We’re using hemp as part of land restoration and carbon capture projects to support climate action goals.

5. Policy, Regulation & Advocacy

We work closely with regulators, policymakers, and civil society to promote an evidence-based legal framework for hemp cultivation, processing, and export. MSTRI advocates for responsible, transparent, and ethical hemp industry practices in Uganda and beyond.

Our Approach

At MSTRI, we bring together scientists, farmers, technologists, and entrepreneurs in collaborative innovation. Our model is built around:

  • Field-based research and demonstrations

  • Innovation labs and incubation programs

  • Farmer training and extension support

  • Youth and women inclusion in green enterprise

  • Public-private partnerships for scale-up and impact

Flagship Projects

  • Hemp Innovation Lab (HIL): A facility for product design, processing trials, and testing

  • CBD Research Unit: Focused on extraction, dosage testing, and health studies

  • Farmer Pilot Program: Working with smallholders to grow hemp for profit and soil recovery
