Mwamic Trial and Model Farmer Program

The Model Farmer Program serves as a bridge between pioneering research and community-level adoption, preparing farmers for future participation in a regulated hemp value chain.

Mwamic General Enterprises SMC Ltd is taking the lead in pioneering industrial hemp (sativa) farming in Uganda through a pilot project. Beginning with a small trial of seeds in Eastern Uganda, the project is successfully expanding into plants. These trials are providing crucial data about seed performance, pest management, and climate adaptability, laying the foundation for the future of hemp cultivation in the country.

The Challenge

The development of hemp in Uganda faces several obstacles. The legal environment remains unclear, as hemp is often grouped together with marijuana, creating uncertainty for farmers and investors. Public misconceptions about hemp fuel skepticism and fear within communities. Farmers lack the technical knowledge and resources needed to cultivate hemp responsibly. Investors, on the other hand, hesitate to commit in the absence of a fully developed legal framework and market structure.

The Solution

Mwamic is addressing these challenges with a structured and inclusive approach. Through trials, the company is generating local evidence that proves the viability of industrial hemp (sativa) in Ugandan soils. Beyond research, Mwamic is investing in training and farmer engagement, ensuring that knowledge is shared widely and responsibly. The Model Farmer Program serves as a bridge between pioneering research and community-level adoption, preparing farmers for future participation in a regulated hemp value chain.

Mwamic’s Approach

To overcome challenges and unlock opportunities, Mwamic has adopted a Model Farmer Program that focuses on practical training, community engagement, and long-term value creation.

Benefits of the Approach

  • Provides farmers with hands-on training in hemp agronomy, harvesting, and compliance.
  • Establishes demonstration farms as learning hubs for best practices.
  • Engages over 450 farmers directly, with potential to scale to over 45,000 veterans who have expressed readiness.
  • Builds a responsible and compliant cultivation network aligned with government guidelines.
  • Creates pathways for value addition and export, ensuring benefits beyond farming.
  • Strengthens community trust by clarifying misconceptions and promoting transparency.
  • Positions Uganda as a future global competitor in the hemp (sativa) market.

Mwamic’s vision is to empower Ugandan farmers with a globally competitive cash crop that is environmentally sustainable, socially impactful, and economically rewarding. By combining education, research, and farmer empowerment, Mwamic is building the backbone of Uganda’s industrial hemp industry.

Together, we can shape the future of hemp in Uganda—responsibly, sustainably, and for the benefit of all.
