Our Research Areas

Priority Research Areas

Agronomy & Genetics
Research in agronomy and genetics focuses on understanding how different industrial hemp varieties perform across Uganda’s diverse agro-ecological zones. This includes studying seed performance to identify which types yield the best results under local conditions. Emphasis is placed on both dual-use hemp (used for fiber and seed) and fiber-specific strains suited for industrial applications. Additionally, research is needed to develop effective pest and disease management strategies that align with organic and sustainable farming practices.

Processing & Product Innovation
This area explores ways to enhance value addition through local processing technologies. Key topics include the extraction of seed oil and the development of by-products that can serve various industries. Another focus is the advancement of fiber decortication tools to make processing more accessible and efficient for small- to mid-scale farmers. Researchers are also encouraged to investigate innovative hemp-based products such as bioplastics, sustainable textiles, and construction materials like hempcrete, which offer eco-friendly alternatives to conventional options.

Sustainability & Soil Science
Sustainability research aims to measure the environmental benefits of hemp cultivation. Studies will examine hemp’s ability to improve soil fertility and its potential role in carbon sequestration—key factors in regenerative agriculture. Further exploration into integrating hemp into climate-smart agricultural systems is encouraged, along with evaluating water-efficient farming methods that maximize yield while conserving resources.

Socio-Economic Impact
This area of research addresses the broader impact of industrial hemp on society and the economy. Researchers are invited to investigate how hemp farming can contribute to rural job creation and economic empowerment, particularly in underserved communities. Studies may also focus on the development of gender-inclusive agriculture models that ensure women benefit equally from opportunities in the hemp value chain. Additionally, understanding local perceptions, cultural acceptance, and the effectiveness of public education campaigns is critical to driving adoption and long-term success.
